Since 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix has brought in more than 720,000 international visitors and generated over S$2.2 billion in tourism receipts, according to Singapore Tourism Board. It was the world’s first Formula 1 night race, and it remains one of Singapore’s signature global events.
But how does it actually get built? How does a working city with live traffic, active businesses, museums and residential streets become a world-class racing circuit, host a global broadcast, and return to normal within days?
That’s the question we set out to answer when we designed a behind-the-scenes immersion for a group of global event professionals. This is the case study of how we did it, what participants took away and how you can bring a version of it to your own team.
We’re currently running a taster version of this immersion, a shorter, public-facing preview of the full experience, open for a limited number of bookings.
It’s a two-hour session covering the same core themes above, and it’s the fastest way for your team to experience what this immersion offers before committing to a private version.
Note: This is an independent experience curated by TourThisCity, exploring publicly accessible areas around the Singapore street circuit. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Formula 1 or the Singapore Grand Prix.
A group of MICE planners, destination management leaders and corporate event teams came to us with a specific ask. Before the actual race, they wanted to understand how the event is built: the planning, collaboration, stakeholder coordination and operational discipline behind delivering a global event inside a live city.
Their real question was bigger than motorsport: what could Singapore’s approach to executing a complex, high-stakes event teach us about running ambitious experiences in our own destinations and organisations?
With race preparations underway, we took the group through sections of the Marina Bay Street Circuit as the transformation was happening in real time. Through insider commentary and on-the-ground observation, the immersion covered:
The most powerful insight was that the Singapore Grand Prix is far more than a sporting event. It is a city-wide collaboration involving government, businesses, event specialists, operations teams and communities, aligned around one fixed, immovable deadline.
That’s a problem every one of these participants recognised from their own work, whether they run a global conference, a festival, or a destination campaign. The mechanics of the race translated directly into takeaways they could use:
Singapore’s compact geography made this visible in a way it rarely is elsewhere with the circuit woven directly through an active, working city. That made the immersion less about F1 and more about urban planning, operations and experience design under real constraints.
