How can sustainability move beyond ambition and become embedded in everyday operations? When a Bhutanese delegation of hotel assessors and sustainable hospitality professionals visited Singapore, they wanted practical insights into how leading hospitality organisations approach sustainability at scale. This is the case study of how we designed a behind-the-scenes learning journey to help them navigate the real-world challenges of responsible growth.

The Brief

As Bhutan develops its own green hospitality standards, the delegation wanted to learn from Singapore’s hospitality sector. They needed to understand more than just the successful initiatives; they wanted to see the challenges, trade-offs, and operational realities behind implementing green practices.

What TourThisCity Built

TourThisCity designed a behind-the-scenes learning journey connecting the delegation with sustainability practitioners from two leading five-star hospitality properties in Singapore. Rather than focusing only on achievements, the conversations explored the realities behind implementation; what works, what requires adaptation and what continues to evolve.

Through candid discussions with internal teams, the immersion covered:

  • How sustainability strategies are translated into everyday operations
  • The real challenges of implementing green practices at scale
  • Specific circularity and resource management initiatives
  • Biodiversity conservation and nature-based approaches
  • Community engagement and responsible stewardship

What Participants Took Away

The most meaningful exchange came from recognising the shared values between two very different hospitality contexts. For Bhutan, where environmental stewardship and the relationship between people and nature are central to its development philosophy, Singapore’s approach offered valuable practical perspectives.

Participants discovered that while destinations and operating environments may differ, many of the challenges of sustainable hospitality are universal. The experience created space for practitioners to compare approaches, question assumptions and consider how ideas could translate into their own context. Key takeaways directly related to their business right away included:

  • Immediate strategies for implementing green initiatives and sustainability practices at scale in luxury hospitality.
  • Frameworks for moving from sustainability commitments to measurable action in everyday operations.
  • A better understanding of the operational realities behind sustainability strategies to inform their own responsible hospitality standards.
  • Actionable methods to balance business growth with environmental responsibility.
  • Best practices gathered through cross-cultural learning between two destinations with strong sustainability ambitions.

Client Feedback

“The Bhutanese delegation came with genuine curiosity and left with so much more and that is a direct reflection of the quality of access TourThisCity provided. Watching practitioners from two very different hospitality contexts find common ground in the shared language of sustainability was truly something special.”
